Dean W. Hand

Dean W. Hand, 90, of Sterling, died March 20, 2007, in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with the Rev. Leonard Goering officiating. Services will conclude at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Dean, a life-long resident of Logan County, was born July 18, 1916, in Pawnee Valley to Arthur W. and Margaret (Bird) Hand. He attended Pawnee Grade School and graduated from Sterling High School in 1933.
His father passed away when he was 9 years old, leaving Dean and his mother to run the ranch. They sold it and moved to town in 1943. He then joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, in which he served from 1943 to 1946 during World War II. While serving in Texas, he met Mary Frances Brightwell. They were married on Feb. 18, 1945, in Wichita Falls, Texas. Soon after, he was sent to the China Theater, where he served as a code dispatcher at various bases.
Upon returning to Sterling, he worked for Production Credit Association as a field man. He later served as president of Production Credit Association. He retired in 1983.
Dean was a member of many organizations. He was a life member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336, a Masonic Lodge No. 54 Past Master 32, past president of Rotary, and was a member of the Logan County Historical Society and Friends of the Sterling Public Library. He was also co-founder of the Sterling Camera Club.
Among his many hobbies, he enjoyed fishing, golf, photography, archery, painting and leather carving. After retirement, Dean turned his interest of Western history into a business as a book dealer of "Western Americana." He often designed and tooled leather dust covers for his favorite editions.
Dean is survived by his wife, Mary F. Hand of Sterling; daughter, Paula F. Cornelison of Aurora; four grandchildren, Scott Cornelison and wife Judy of Canton, Ohio, Brian Cornelison and wife Nancy of Ankeny, Iowa, Paul Cornelison and wife Dawn of Columbia, Mo., and Karen Ssessanga and husband Fred of Aurora; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Neil Hand; and sisters, Pauline Arnold and Marjorie Hess.
Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Sterling Public Library or Masonic Lodge No. 54.
