Carl Marion Smith, 70, of Firestone, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in Lafayette, at Good Samaritan Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith T. Hudiburgh officiating. Cremation has been chosen. Inurnment will be at 3 p.m. at the Fleming Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born Dec. 29, 1937, to Benjamin F. and Hazel V. (Dykes) Smith, in Flagler. He attended Sterling schools, graduating in 1957.
He married Kathi Lane, but they were later divorced.
Mr. Smith joined the U.S. Marine Corp. for four years and was stationed in Japan and Hawaii. He worked various jobs and owned a gas station in Longmont. He later owned and operated a construction company. His greatest accomplishment was constructing the Rinn United Methodist Church in Firestone.
He was a member of the Optimus Club, and the Longmont Luncheon Club.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 27 years, Peggy Acott of Fleming; son, Luke Smith and wife Stefanie of Schwabach, Germany; daughter, LaDaryn Backstrum and husband Mike of Longmont; brother, Paul Smith and wife Loretta of Akron; sisters, Juanita Pyle and husband Jim of Eaton, and Shirley Doris and husband Jim of Sterling; and two grandchildren, Karra Smith of Hurst, Texas, and Lanie Backstrum of Longmont.
He is preceded in death by his parents.
