Berniece was born May 14, 1923 in Elkhart, Kansas to Parker and Ethel Robinson Riley. She had ten brothers and sisters. Berniece was happy growing up in her large family and was a very bright child. She attended Elkhart Public Schools.
Berniece was working in Center, CO when she met and fell in love with Phil Hellman. They were married in Taos, New Mexico in 1952. Shortly after they were married, Phil secured a position as a ranch manager south of the small town of Daily, CO. Devoted wife and mother, she would make a loving home there for over forty years. She raised five children there. Loving and caring for each one. She took great pride in her house and the many meals she served to hungry farmhands. Berniece liked to garden, loved growing flowers, and was excellent at embroidery.
Berniece was a devoted believer and a long time member of the United Methodist Church. She also was very active in the Haxtun Chapter of Eastern Star. Berniece memorized all her presentations. She would retain her remarkable ability to recall names and events even in her later years even with the Parkinson's she developed. One of her daughters stated it best, "she has a wonderful mind". Her battle with Parkinson's was devastating to her body but never to her spirit. A true inspiration to everyone.
Berniece is survived by her children Patricia Jones and husband Richard of Lincoln, CA, Susan Waychoff and husband Joe of Eufala, Alabama, Sue Bylsma and husband Mike of Wiggins, CO, Sharon Reiman, Cheyenne, WY and Cody Hellman and wife Judy of Sterling. Berniece also had many grandchildren and great grandchildren that she loved and thought of.
A devoted wife and mother she will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved her.
