Barney Fielder, Jr., 90, of Sterling, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, in Sterling. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. John E. Roberts officiating. Services will conclude at the church. Cremation has been chosen.
He was born Jan 27. 1918, to Barney Sr. and Berta Mae (Connor) Fielder in Clarendon, Texas. He attended Denver North High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Barney married Bobbie Keller and had eight children. In 1979, he married Anita Litty and they spent 29 wonderful years together.
He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as yardmaster for 39 years, retiring in 1978. He also sold over 350 new homes in Charmony.
Barney was a member of the First Baptist Church for 57 years, the Sterling BPO Elks Lodge No. 1336, American Legion Post No. 20, Sterling Country Club and Riverview Golf Club.
For many years, Barney was one of the outstanding golfers in northeast Colorado. The many championships that he won throughout the years included: The state Elk Championship, the state American Legion Championship, the state Sandgreen Championship (eight times), the Riverview Open, the Brush Invitational, the Sterling C.C. Championship, Sterling C.C. Senior Championship, and the Sterling Memorial Day Invitational. He once birdied six holes in a row to come from behind and capture what was then called the Sterling City Championship. He started a phenominal feat of shooting "his age" at age 66 and continued this many times until age 86.
Barney had a deep love of God and was recently honored as a 57-year member of the First Baptist Church of Sterling. He was more proud of this than any of his golf accomplishments.
Barney's love of golf carried over to his family. His son, Ray, is a long time P.G.A. golf professional in the Denver area. His son, John, played on the P.G.A. tour, and both his son, Bill, and his grandson, Danny, became golf course superintendents. He also has a grandson, Johnny, who is in the golf course business in Louisiana.
Barney will be sorely missed by family, friends, and his church family.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Fielder of Sterling; sons, Doug Fielder of Tempe, Ariz., Bill Fielder and wife Myrna of Sterling, Ray Fielder and wife Kerri of Broomfield, and Richard Fielder of California; daughters, Patti Fielder of Imperial, Neb., and Becky Evans of Glendale, Ariz.; stepchildren, Steve Timmermeyer and wife Sandy, Chris Timmermeyer and wife Karen, Joe Timmermeyer and wife Eileen, and Janet Erion and husband Dan, all of Denver; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
