Babetta "Babs" Jeanne Wurtz, 88, formerly of Sterling, CO died Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Residence At Oakridge in Fort Collins, CO. Visitation will be held from 9 am until service time. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 24 at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home with Rev. Brian Kroeger officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Babetta was born to Leo and Beulah (Axtell) Hughes on September 11, 1928 in Fairbury, Nebraska.
She married William L. Wurtz on June 24, 1951 in Fairbury, NE. They lived in Ainsworth, NE, Schuyler, NE and Sterling, CO. Known by many as Babs, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper. Babs was a percussionist and played in the Sterling Community Band which her husband directed in the summers. She was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church and was very active in church groups and church choir. She was also a member of DAR and sang in the Sterling Chapter of Sweet Adenline's. Babs was known for her sewing and beautiful handwork.
Bill and Babs loved traveling with their RV. They spent their 50th wedding anniversary driving the Alcan Highway through Canada and Alaska.
Following the death of her husband Bill Wurtz in 2005, Babs left Sterling and moved to Fort Collins to be near her children and grandchildren.
Babs resided at the Residence at Oakridge for 10 years. The staff loved, nurtured and cared for her.
Survivors include her children, Martha Hohweiler and husband Chris of Detroit Lakes, MN, Carol Smith and husband Richard of Fort Collins, David Wurtz and wife Stacy of Livermore; grandchildren, Christopher Hohwweiler and wife Elizabeth, Heather Hairgrove and husband Andy, Jennifer LeBaron and husband Ryan, Julia Meehleis and husband Justin, Richard Smith and wife Amy, Justin Wurtz and wife Amber and Jason Wurtz; great-grandchildren, Adam and Allison Hohweiler, Adalynn, Annika, Garrett and Jacob LeBaron, Landon and Ryker Meehleis, Weston and Wyatt Smith.
Preceeding her in death were her husband and parents.
