Freddie Ann (Cain) Hunt, 89 of Sterling passed away Saturday, June 27, 2026. Ann will be laid to rest at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 18, at Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney, Nebraska with a Celebration of life service at 11:00 a.m. at Halouska Family Chaney-Reager F.H in Sterling, Colorado.
Freddie Ann (Cain) Hunt was born in Brady, TX, 15 October 1936, to Jake William and Bessie Allene (Martin) Cain. They moved to Cuero, TX, in 1939 where she attended school through 4th grade. They moved to Mission, TX, in 1945 where she attended school and graduated from Mission High School in 1954. She was a majorette for the band for 3 years; the band won many awards for marching in parades and performances and she won many medals in twirling contests. They moved to Sidney, NE, in 1954. She attended Hastings College, Hastings, NE, 1954-1955, where she was a majorette for the college band, then started working in June 1955 at Sioux Army Depot, Sidney, as a secretary to the head of Inspection Division, eventually becoming the Secretary to the Depot Commander, Executive Officer, and Executive Assistant in 1962, a position she held for 5 years until the depot was closed in June 1967.
She married Cecil Lewis (George) Hunt in Sidney on April 14, 1960. They purchased and lived in a small house in Sunol, NE. They purchased and operated the Glendo Marina, Glendo, WY, from 1965 until 1971, building it into a popular marina/resort with a store, motel, trailer park, café, gas dock, boat rentals, and liquor store in Glendo State Park (the first liquor sales allowed in a Wyoming State Park). They first sold it in July 1967 and moved to Hermiston, OR, where Ann transferred with the civil service to Umatilla Army Depot to the position of Secretary to the Executive Assistant until April 1968. They had to resume ownership and operation of Glendo Marina in September 1967, but George returned through hunting season and then he came back to Umatilla for the winter. They both moved back to Glendo in April 1968, selling it again in 1971.
They moved to Sterling, CO, in 1972, purchasing property on North Sterling Reservoir, building and operating North Sterling Marina, a full-scale marina popular with fishermen and boaters. In 1974 they also built and operated a full marine and recreational vehicle sales and service in Sterling, eventually opening marine stores in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Loveland, CO, and Ogallala, NE. With George in charge of sales, Ann was in charge of all office procedures. In December 1989 they sold all but the marina on the lake and retired from the marine business. In 1992 they sold the marina, property, and home at the lake to Colorado State Parks and Recreation to make the lake a State Park and use their home as the Park Headquarters. They moved to a home in Sterling. They really enjoyed the marine business telling all they “sold family fun.” They also started and owned from 1974 to 1986 Sports Unlimited, Inc., the only motorcycle business to own five major franchises under one roof.
Their travels took them around the world to many interesting and exciting places, from Morocco, Hong Kong, and Europe.
In April 2018, prior to George’s death that June, they were married 58 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, father, mother, and mother- and father-in-law, Cecil and Berenice Hunt; sister Glenda and husband Rollie Roberts; brothers-in-law and wives, Ron and Mary Lou Hunt and Don and Shirley Hunt; niece Kathy (Hunt) Korbelik, and nephew Timothy Roberts.
