Albert "Ab" Conrad Volz, 90, of Sterling, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012, in Sterling. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with Vigil service and rosary to follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 23, at Knights of Columbus Hall, with the Rev. Robert L. Wedow officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military rites.
Ab was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Wasserlos, Germany, to Wendelin and Katherina (Kerber) Volz. He came to the U.S. with his family in 1924. They settled in Ovid, where he received his schooling. He has spent his entire life in northeast Colorado.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 13, 1942, serving in the European Theatre, and was discharged on March 13, 1946, with the rank of sergeant. With the exception of the five and a half years Ab worked in the oil fields in the early 1950s, he spent his entire life around farming and livestock in the Sterling area.
Ab was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 3541 and the American Legion Post No. 20. He was also a member of the DAV No. 34. He enjoyed traveling and rodeos and all sports.
He is survived by his daughter, JoAnn Schomerus and husband Doug of Castle Rock; sons, Richard Volz and wife Gayle of Fort Morgan, Jim Volz and Linda Law of Sterling; brother, Willie Volz and wife Katie of Sterling; special friends, Jerry and Linda Meisner; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Ab was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Herman Volz.
