Obituary

Albert Harold Nickal, 80, of Denver, died Oct. 16, 2009, in Denver. Closed casket services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home, with Pastor Stephen Weams officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Nickal was born to Johnny and Elizabeth (Sinner) Nickal in Hillrose. He attended rural Matthews Elementary and Padroni schools, receiving his high school diploma when he enlisted in the military.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in February 1948. He served 21 years, retiring as Staff Sergeant. During his service, he was stationed in Japan, Korea and Vietnam and trained in aircraft maintenance.

Mr. Nickal went to work in Denver, and was manager of a packaging company that employed the handicapped. He retired in 1998.

On Oct. 4, 1953, he married Jennie Persing in Pitcher Hill, N.Y. They later divorced.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Denver.

Mr. Nickal is survived by his daughters, Maureen Betsinger of Rochester, N.Y., Julie Goodale of Tampa, Fla.; sons, William Nickal and James Nickal, both of Chittenango, N.Y.; sister, Helen McKnight of Sterling; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Vernon Nickal; brothers, Leo, John and Harold Nickal; sister, Flora Hilberg; grandson, Kenneth Freunscht; and granddaughter, Peggy Betsinger.
